Horrible Bank! I obtained a car loan through this bank and received a letter in the mail to set up online banking. However, it wouldn't work, so I called customer service. They informed me that I couldn't set up online banking until the account had been open for 30 days. After 31 days, I called back, but they refused to speak with me because I was second on the loan. They insisted on speaking to my husband, but even when I handed him the phone, they demanded that he call back from his own number. That's unreasonable! He tried calling back to set up online banking, but it still didn't work. After four calls, we finally managed to set it up. We never received any information regarding how to pay the loan. After this terrible experience with representatives who were difficult to understand, we refinanced the loan at a local bank—the original bank was affiliated with the dealership. Now, they are withholding my payoff, which they received two days ago (sent by UPS and signed for upon receipt), and they still haven't paid off the vehicle. I advise you not to bank with this institution.

Couple of things. Just updated my phone and had to completely delete the 5/3 app just to be able to access my mobile banking. You wouldn't believe the unhelpful answers they were giving me. Secondly, I have a loan account with them. I do not have automatic deduction set up. I made a transfer payment from checking to loan payment, and the system then processed the loan payment, which doubled the amount, and now I have to wait 5 days to rectify their mistake. They can take money quickly from you, but if they owe you, you'll have to wait and like it. Normally, I have no issues, but lately, it's been one problem after another.

Then you have to talk to someone with poor English

I was on hold for 45 minutes to get a line manager, and when customer service tracked down Joy, she couldn't hear me. The other three people I was handed off to before her heard me just fine. I could hear everything Joy said and actually started yelling back to her my name, which is what she requested, and then she hung up. After 45 minutes of being tossed around and on hold, I'm back to square one. Joy may need a lesson in good manners. She could have at least tried to figure out what she was doing wrong to not hear me before hanging up. Fifth Third is so frustrating.

5/3 has been my bank for over 10 years, and I am really surprised by all the complaints from people on here. It just proves that people will be quick to post a negative review and not a positive one, so here I am to change that. One incident happened a couple of years ago; my teenager got scammed on Instagram into using Zelle to give all his $600+ to a "Bitcoin miner." After I had a meltdown, I went to the bank, filed a dispute with little to no hope of getting his money back. A month later, the bank successfully returned it to his minor account. I was so impressed by their level of concern and commitment in being able to follow through the investigation without giving up and returning his hard-earned money, from which he learned a very valuable lesson. 5/3 is a great bank, and it deserves 5 stars.

Today I attempted to transfer money from my money market to my checking account using the app. This transaction has been completed many times before. I received an error message stating, "Something doesn't look quite right, please contact customer service." I informed customer service of this problem and was told, "You cannot transfer from your money market online; you must visit your local branch."

Being a disabled veteran and I use a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury received in service, it is difficult for me to transfer into a vehicle and drive to my local bank branch. It is painful.

I left the customer service chat stream and re-entered the chat box hoping to get a different representative. I was successful in reaching a a new representative; however, they disregarded the problem of misinformation and advised me to delete and re-download the Fifth Third app or to use 53.com. It was not until I re-addressed the inconsistency in the knowledge of the individual during the previous chat which was then discussed. I had included the dates that I had made previous transfers online. The representative was very kind and informed me that this problem would be escalated to the next level.

My trust in Fifth Third customer service has been shaken. Although I have been with them for decades. I am considering changing banks now. To complete the transfer, my wife drove 15 miles from our home to the nearest open branch to make our transaction.

My interaction with customer service is unacceptable. I'm writing this review to inform Fifth Third customers of a problem with the base knowledge of some working in customer service. Please be warned.

Thank you for your attention.

Horrible bank! Do not put your money in this institution! They don't care about their customers, and customer service is in India and the Philippines. They don't even treat their own employees well; that is why they can't deliver good customer service. Look elsewhere—you have been warned!

I cashed a loan check from Regional Finance, written out on Fifth Third Bank. I was charged a $48.00 fee to cash the check because I was not a member of Fifth Third. It's unfair for a bank to charge a fee for cashing a check from their own institution. They are affiliated with Wells Fargo, which may explain a lot. Banks like these generate wealth from their customers, knowing that if they fail, they will still be wealthy while their customers lose everything they own. I advise banking with Credit Unions that are owned by the members and managed for their benefit, not for the elite owners who look down on their members and extract every penny they can from them.

Horrible bank system. They freeze your account at any time, even if you have been with them for a long time. Rarely do you find someone in the US office to help; they always send you to deal with people in the Philippines. They suspect everyone is coming to defraud them. The best thing to do is to sue them if you encounter any issue, as there are lots of lawyers who will take your case on a contingency basis.

This is the worst bank I have ever used! I deposited a check and was told it would take a day or two to clear. After I deposited it, they processed it but said it will take over a week to access my funds. They never answer the phone. When you do finally speak with someone, they just keep passing the buck. Not to mention, I've been waiting for a replacement card for over two weeks now.

Horrible bank. Run away from this bank; they can freeze your account at any time to investigate any transaction. I just deposited a check into a business account only to find out the next day that the account is frozen until I provide them with a bank statement from my client showing the check has cleared. Who is going to give you their own bank statement to satisfy your bank's ridiculous request?

I love my bank. They do right by me. It's been the same bank for 7 years or more now. They listen to your concerns, make direct deposit so easy, and of course, the online app lets me move money when I need to instantly.

"I would give it zero if I could. I changed banks and they required me to mail in a form instead of changing it for me. They entered the wrong auto payment bank account number from the form I mailed in. The auto payment was returned. I received no letter or email notification that it didn't go through. They told me they never contacted me about the payment being returned due to no matching account and it wasn't required. All I saw was the last four numbers of the auto bank account on my end on the computer, so I had no clue. I was set up for automatic payments and notifications if anything was returned or late. I received nothing. I normally check all my accounts every month, even if set up for automatic payments. But that month, my partner had two cancer diagnoses at the VA hospital out of town, so I missed a month. When I checked the account, there was a late payment due 4/28 on the latest bank statement 5/3. I immediately called and paid it 5/4. I called my bank and no auto payment came to them. I called customer service and spoke to a supervisor who said my form must have been filled out incorrectly. It was all my fault. They marked me 30 days late, and my credit rating dropped 50 points. They were unkind and unpleasant, and wouldn't send me a copy of the form they claimed I filled out with the wrong account number. I had this credit card for years, never a late payment, and an 11k credit limit. The balance and payment due were 28.00. I paid the balance and closed the account. This company and its employees are just horrid. Do not open an account with them.

When I came into this branch a few weeks ago to set up an account, Juanisha Mapp helped me. She seemed very friendly and outgoing, and it was a good experience. However, that all changed today when I tried to activate my debit card and could not do so because it was telling me my SSN and date of birth were invalid. After two attempts, it connected me to customer service. The representative said the SSN did not match the one on the account. She told me I would have to go to the branch to fix it before she could activate my debit card. Then she tells me she is going to connect me to the automated line to activate the card. I stated it would not work; that's why I was on the phone with her, and if the SSN did not match, it would not activate. She claimed it would but put me back to the automated system, which, of course, did not work and put me back to customer service. Then the new representative asked me to verify the co-signer's name on the account, which now changed everything, as I had no co-signer on the account. I went into the bank alone to set up the account.

So now I have a card I cannot activate, an SSN not matching mine on the account, and possibly a co-signer on my account that should not be there. They said they could not help me and that I would have to go to the branch to fix my SSN and find out the other name on the account. So I had to ruin my whole day, drop everything I was doing, and head to the bank, which is a 20-minute ride and consumes a decent amount of fuel (as I drive a large diesel truck with horrible gas mileage). I had to wait in line for 15 minutes. The teller at the bank was great and did his best to assist me. He found out the problem was that one of the numbers in the SSN was hit twice accidentally (there was a keypad hooked to a computer with no screen for me to see, and the number was never verified by the banker), which threw off the next two numbers and left off the last one. He could not fix it; he said I would have to wait for Juanisha Mapp to come back from lunch to fix it and to sit and wait. So I sat and waited for her to come back from lunch, and then she did not even acknowledge me. She told him to tell me I would have to come back with my SSN card. I asked why when I did not need it to set up the account. It was obviously an honest mistake, and I just drove, dropped everything I was doing today, wasted my time and gas to come to try to straighten this out, and you are going to make me have to find the time during a workday to waste my gas and time again to fix this issue that could easily be fixed now while also having the wrong SSN still attached to my account. It made no sense to me, so I closed my accounts, which I did not need my SSN card for either, and walked to her office and said thank you for the good customer service; you just cost the bank an account. She could care less, said nothing, then I closed my accounts, and as I looked for my reviews online, she said okay, thank you (the only thing she said to me the whole time I was there). All I wanted was my debit card activated and my account straightened out. Horrible customer service once you are a customer, and they could care less about customer retention. If you go in there to set up an account, the great treatment you get when setting up an account is not going to be the same treatment once you are a customer, obviously.

Complete trash. Horrible customer service, double billing, lost payments, and outrageous payoff penalties. Owed $1,100 and decided to pay it off three months early, and they charged $800 for early payment. If ever a company needed to be shut down, it is this one. Thank God we are done with this nightmare.

How much is the Fifth Third Bank overdraft fee?

Lauren Smith, WalletHub Staff Writer

@laurenellesmith

The Fifth Third Bank overdraft fee is $37 per transaction that overdraws your account, if you have a Fifth Third Bank checking account that allows overdrafts. Some Fifth Third Bank accounts will not charge an overdraft fee but only because transactions that would overdraw your account will be declined.

Key Things to Know About Fifth Third Bank Overdraft Fees

  • Not all accounts are eligible for overdraft services. While most of Fifth Third Bank's checking accounts come with overdraft capabilities, not all of them do. For example, any transaction that would overdraw the Fifth Third Momentum Checking will automatically be declined. Therefore, the Fifth Third Momentum Checking will never be charged overdraft fees.
  • Overdraft fee waivers could be available. If this is your first time overdrawing your account, your bank may agree to waive the overdraft fee as a courtesy. Call Fifth Third Bank at 1 (866) 671-5353 to request to have your overdraft fee waived.
  • You must opt-in to some overdraft services. By default, checks and recurring debit card transactions may go through even if you don't have sufficient funds in your account, resulting in an overdraft fee. However, you must opt-in to allow your account to be overdrawn by individual ATM or debit card transactions. If you do not opt-in to this service, any requested ATM or debit card transactions for which you do not have sufficient funds will be declined, and your account will not be charged.
  • You can set up overdraft protection to prevent fees. If you're concerned about overdraft fees, Fifth Third Bank offers a service called overdraft protection that allows you to link a Fifth Third Bank savings account, credit card, or second checking account to your main checking account. In the event that your account does not have sufficient funds for a requested transaction, funds will be transferred from the linked account to the main account to cover the purchase.
  • Fifth Third Bank will only charge you up to 3 overdraft fees per day. Even if you attempt transactions that would overdraw your account more than 3 times in a day, you will only be charged 3 overdraft fees.
  • Excessive overdrafts could have other consequences. Fees aren't the only way banks punish you for overdrawing your checking account. If you have too many overdrafts, Fifth Third Bank may report it to ChexSystems. ChexSystems is like the credit reporting agencies, but for bank accounts. If you've ever mishandled a bank account in the past – by bouncing checks, having too many overdrafts or failing to pay fees, for example – you may have a ChexSystems report. Based on the information contained in this report, a bank may refuse to accept you as a customer in the future.

Fifth Third Bank's overdraft fee of $37 per transaction is above average. According to WalletHub's latest Banking Landscape Report, the average overdraft fee for checking accounts in the United States is $27.79.

Is Fifth Third Bank FDIC insured?

Reply

Lauren Smith, WalletHub Staff Writer

@laurenellesmith

Yes, a Fifth Third Bank account is FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per customer, per account ownership category. This means that even if Fifth Third Bank fails, you will eventually be able to recover an individual account's balance up to $250,000.

If you have a joint account, each co-owner of the account is considered a separately insured customer. As a result, you can collectively recover the account's balance up to $500,000 in the event of a bank failure, assuming you have no other shared accounts.

However, not all financial products offered by Fifth Third Bank are FDIC-insured. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation only insures deposit accounts. They do not insure investment products, which can lose value.

Fifth Third Bank Products Covered by FDIC Insurance

  • Checking accounts
  • Savings accounts
  • Money market accounts
  • Certificates of deposit (CDs)

Fifth Third Bank Products NOT Covered by FDIC Insurance

  • Mutual funds
  • Life insurance policies
  • Annuities
  • Investment services
