  • Eyewitness account of the sinking of the Titanic, 1912 | Shortly before midnight on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg roughly 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. | Shortly before midnight on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg roughly 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. Two and a half hours later, at 2:20 a.m., the ship sank with approximately 1500 people still on board. This letter, written on Carpathia stationery by first-class passenger Doctor Washington Dodge, is a vivid account of the sinking that describes the Titanic’s final hours. It is one of the earliest, most immediate, and compelling accounts of the disaster. In addition, the carelessness of Dodge’s handwriting offers a glimpse into his state of mind as he penned his testimony. Dodge, a prominent doctor, banker, and politician from San Francisco, boarded the Titanic at Southampton on April 10 with his wife Ruth and son Washington Dodge Jr. His description of the sinking was written within days after the disaster, as the Carpathia ferried the Titanic survivors to New York. Carpathia passenger Doctor Frank H. Blackmarr began soliciting narratives from various passengers, including Dr. Dodge. He assembled a scrapbook of firsthand accounts and used them to lecture about the sinking. Dodge’s tale begins at 11:40 p.m. when he and his wife were awakened by the ship’s impact with the iceberg. Twice Dodge went on deck and was told there was no danger. "Having been told that there was...

  • The Titanic Disaster, Steamship Lanes, and the Establishment of the Ice Patrol. The 1912 Report of the Hydrographer, US Navy.

  • REPORT OF THE HYDROGRAPHER HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE, Washington, D.C., September 11, 1912 From: Hydrographer. To: Bureau of Navigation. Subject: Annual Report. 1. I respectfully submit the following report of the Hydrographer for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1912. Toward the end of the report statistics showing a summary of the work of the divisions are given. 2. The work of the Hydrographic Office has increased enormously during the past 10 years, and even during the past year. In fact, it is increasing all the time, and the present force of employees is working at a very high pressure all the time. 3. During the year the office has collected a great deal of valuable information from various sources. Much of this has been published in Notices to Mariners, Bulletins, Daily Memoranda, and Pilot Charts. These publications are furnished to volunteer observers throughout the world in return for the information which they furnish to the office. Much of the information received is, of course, not published; and the editing of this received information constitutes one of the most important duties in the office. It is essential that the voluntary collection of information should be continued and that the number of observers should be increased. 4. Much of the information contained in the Notices to Mariners, Bulletins, and Daily Memoranda has been so important to the Navy and the maritime interests of the country that it has been sent broadcast by radio, so that all vessels within reac...

  • The Titanic hearings were conducted by a special subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee and chaired by Senator William A. Smith (R-MI). The hearings began on April 19, 1912, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The next week the hearings were moved to the new caucus room of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. They were the first hearings to be held in that room. A total of 82 witnesses testified about ice warnings that were ignored, the inadequate number of lifeboats, the ship’s speed, the failure of nearby ships to respond to the Titanic’s distress calls, and the treatment of passengers of different classes. The hearings concluded on May 28, 1912, when Senator Smith visited the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, at port in New York, to interview some of its crew. When the Titanic sank, the Olympic was about 500 miles away. The subcommittee hearing transcripts, which were published in 1912, are over 1,100 pages long. They were issued as Senate Document 726, 62nd Congress, 2nd session, and are called: “Titanic” Disaster: Hearings before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Commerce, United States Senate, Sixty-Second Congress, Second Session, Pursuant to S. Res. 283, Directing the Committee on Commerce to Investigate the Causes Leading to the Wreck of the White Star Liner “Titanic.” There is an index to the testimony broken out by topic–such as “collision, effect of” and “ship light in distance.” Spawned by the popularity of the movie o...
