Top 10 Supermarket Retail Chains In France | ESM Magazine (2024)

After averaging at a rate of 5.7% during 2023, inflation in France has fallen back to more manageable levels in recent months, with the country's central bank anticipating that the rate will slow to 1.8% by the start of 2025.

May 2024 saw a 2.2% year-on-year increase in the consumer price index (down from 5.1% in May 2023), with an increase in the price of energy and fresh food offset by declines in services and tobacco, according to Insee, the country's national statistics body.

Food consumption declined in April, separate data showed, although this was largely driven by declines in chocolate and confectionery, as a result of Easter taking place in March this year. Canned and processed fish consumption was also down sharply in April, however.

According to Kantar, shopper spend in the French market is 'stabilising', with the number of transactions increasing, even as the value of baskets sees a reduction. In the period from 15 April to 12 May, the supermarket (+0.3%) and online (+0.3%) channels saw the biggest growth in share, while the proximity channel was also in growth.

Separately, a recent study by market leader E.Leclerc found that 81% of French families are concerned about their household's financial stability. Contributing factors include inflation, health worries, global warming, and conflict. The study noted that optimism about the future is scarce, with 80% of respondents believing significant challenges lie ahead. Additionally, 92% of families are exercising caution with their spending, and 34% count their expenses down to the nearest euro while shopping.
